The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
