"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos often show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"So all are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The group have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience required a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

However the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
